Monikkenwerk - Monks work

Dit is het laatste gedeelte van de Abdij. Fantasie was een belangrijk onderdeel in dit gedeelte. Mijn vrouw heeft een geweldige spreuk gemaakt; Durf te verdwalen in je eigen fantasie.
Daar heb ik een illustratie van gemaakt in mediëval stijl. Nu begrijp ik de uitdrukking; monikkenwerk. Na bijna een week op de Abdij wordt het tijd om de reis te vervolgen. Het duo is goed uitgerust en zijn in een zeer goede conditie. Sneezy had hier wel willen blijven; heerlijke groenten, de Franse kaas en het klimaat.
Het idee weer over zee te vliegen was niet erg aantrekkelijk. De reis wordt vervolgd naar het Prespameer. Daar verblijven ze een lange periode bij de kroeskoppelikanen. Waselius keek naar de verontwaardigde blik naar de pelikaan...‘kroeskop... pelikanen’. ‘Ja, voegde Sneezy er meteen aan toe.... ’dat zijn zwarte pelikanen en die komen helemaal uit Suriname!’ ‘Die bestaan helemaal niet Sneezy!’ ‘Jazeker wel, want je hebt ’witte zwanen, zwarte zwanen’, dus waarom geen zwarte pelikanen!‘

This is the last part of the Abbey. Fantasy was an important part in this section. My wife has made a great spell; Dare to get lost in your own imagination. Zebravink met zebrastrepen! - a zebra Finch with zebra stripes?

Onze vink vloog met zijn schetsen naar de eekhoorn die hem verder zou helpen. Bij het zien van het schetsvelletje keek hij nog eens goed naar de vink. Verschrikt riep hij; 'Oh nee, oh nee, dat ga ik niet doen! Je lijkt wel een 'boef! Een petje en een ijzeren bal aan je pootje, dan kun niet meer ontsnappen'. De vink begreep de ophef van de eekhoorn niet.
Gelukkig werd er na goed overleg een compromis gesloten. Sneezy denkt dat het een verzonnen verhaal is. Dan haalt Waselius het originele boek waarin alles gedocumenteerd is'. 'Hier zien jullie het resultaat hoe de zebravink uiteindelijk is geschilderd. Ook is de hele geschiedenis beschreven hoe alles tot stand is gekomen'.

Sneezy kijkt nog eens met belangstelling naar het boekje met de afbeeldingen. 'Volgens mij staan er fouten in!'
Jij zegt dat het een zebravink is en ik zie als kopje dat de eerste letter op een Z lijkt. Helaas hebben de eekhoorns het onder het tapje V geschreven'.
'De eekhoorns hebben het goed gedaan, het valt onder het kopje Vinken. Want er zijn ook appelvinken en goudvinken'.
En dan moet Sneezy heel hard lachen; 'De appelvink met een appel op zijn borst geschilderd en een glimmende gouden vink. Zoals de woorden van Picasso denken; 'Alles wat je kunt bedenken is echt’.

You say it is a zebra finch and I see that the first letter looks like a Z. Unfortunately the squirrels have written it under the tap V.

And then Sneezy has to laugh very loudly; "The apple finch painted with an apple on his chest and a shiny golden finch. As Picasso's words think;"All you can imagine is real".

Mr.P.&Sneezy hebben in het handboek de snavelbeschermers gezien. Dan zien ze welke hulpmiddelen, verstoffen en technieken zijn gebruikt. Het belangrijkste hulpmiddel is de 'vleugelplank'. Hierop ligt de vogel op zijn rug of buik om makkelijk te worden geverfd. Daaronder een afbeelding met veermotieven. In dit geval een bruine basiskleur met verschillende motieven.

Bij het zien van de volgende afbeelding wordt Sneezy héél enthousiast. 'Het zijn de eekhoorns die de vogels hebben beschilderd'. Hij ziet een eekhoorn met veermotieven. Waselius lacht; 'klopt, het waren de eekhoorns'. Vogels konden een kleuren, motieven kiezen, die ze voor de rest van leven zouden dragen. Waselius vertelt dat bij elk vogelsoort een uiterst nauwkeurige beschrijving is gemaakt. De kleuren, veermotieven, een soort dagboek en hoe dit tot stand is gekomen. 
Omdat er zoveel mogelijkheden zijn qua kleuren en motieven hebben de eekhoorns een soort modellenboek gemaakt. Hier laat eekhoorn Lyvara een kleurcombinatie van bruin en blauw zien, met motieven. 
Zo weten we onder andere wat er met de zebravink is gebeurd. Nog voor de eekhoorn meer wilde laten zien, zei de witte vink; 'ik weet wat ik wil.... stop maar met modellen'.
Hij was aanwezig toen de chimpansees de zebra's kleur en motieven aanbrachten. Dát wilde hij ook, zwart en strepen als een echte zebra! En zo maakte de vink een schets, zoals hij zou moeten. Ondanks de afkeuring van Lyvara, gingen ze naar een andere eekhoorn die dit zou uitvoeren.
Hoe dat afloopt over 2 weken!

Mr.P.&Sneezy have seen the beak protectors in the manual. Then they see which tools, substances and techniques are used. The most important tool is the 'wing board'. Seeing the following image, Sneezy is very enthusiastic. "It is the squirrels that painted the birds". He sees a squirrel with feather motifs. Waselius laughs; "That's right, it was the squirrels." Birds could choose colors, motifs that they would wear for the rest of their lives. Waselius says that an extremely accurate description has been made for each species of bird. The colors, feather motifs, a kind of diary and how this came about.
Because there are so many options in terms of colors and motifs, the squirrels have made a kind of model book. Here, squirrel Lyvara shows a color combination of brown and blue, with motifs.

For example, we know what happened to the zebra finch. Even before the squirrel wanted to show more, the white finch said; "I know what I want .... stop models."
He was present when the chimpanzees applied the zebras color and motifs. He wanted that too, black and stripes like a real zebra! And so the finch made a sketch, as he should. Despite Lyvara's disapproval, they went to another squirrel who would perform this.

De snavelbeschermer van de *Snitznurk* - the beak protector of the '*Snitznurk'*

Na het bekijken van de afbeelding van de Ridders tegen de Slakken, komt Hoptarius eindelijk met het originele Vogelboek. Voorzichtig legt hij het neer...
'Dit is het boek waarin werd beschreven hoe de vogels aan hun kleuren zijn gekomen'. Daar lag een oud en beschadigd boek voor hun. Eindelijk komen onze vrienden te weten, wie dat gedaan hebben. Hoptarius geeft het boek aan Waselius, die opent voorzichtig het boek.... Met spanning werd er gekeken, nadat hij de bladzijde had omgeslagen... een vleugel met rare tekens.
Het is geen geheimschrift maar een hele vreemde taal. Aan de hand van bijschriften, duidelijke afbeeldingen is de taal geheel ontcijfert. De monnikken hebben het helemaal vertaald.
Op de rechterpagina zien we de standaard met ‘snavelbeschermers’, met het originele woord er nog onder. Deze worden gebruikt om hun snavel te beschermen als de vogel een kleur krijgt. Het zijn Beschermhoesjes, van klein tot groot en ook verschillend van vorm. Sneezy moet lachen om de snavelbeschermer van de Snitznurk.
Kenmerkend is de grote bobbel op zijn snavel. Hiermee kon hij een zwaar snurkend geluid voortbrengen. Het was een zeer gewaardeerde vogel, maar helaas uitgestorven. 
Je kunt die vogel vergelijken met Klaas Vaak, of het Zandmannetje. Sneezy dacht aan de uitspraak van Picasso: 

‘Everything you can imagine is real’.

Maar nog steeds weten Mr.P.&Sneezy niet wie de vogels hebben beschilderd!

After viewing the image of the Knights against the Snails, Hoptarius finally comes with the original Bird Book. He carefully puts it down ... "This is the book describing how the birds got their colors". An old and damaged book lay before them. Our friends finally find out 'who' did it. Hoptarius gives the book to Waselius, who carefully opens the book .... Tensically, people looked after he turned the page ... a wing with strange characters.
It is not a secret code but a very foreign language. The language is completely deciphered on the basis of captions and clear images. The monks have translated it completely.
On the right-hand page we see the standard with "beak protectors", with the original word still under it. These are used to protect their beak when the bird gets a color. They are protective covers, from small to large and also have different shapes. Sneezy laughs at the beak protector of the 'Snitznurk'.
Characteristic is the large bulge on its beak. With this he could produce a heavy snoring sound. It was a very appreciated bird, but unfortunately extinct.
You can compare that bird with Klaas Vaak or the Sandman. Sneezy thought of Picasso's statement:

"Everything you can imagine is real."

But still Mr. P. & Sneezy don't know who painted the birds!

Ridders tegen slakken - The knights against the snails

Na het verhaal van de beeltenis 'pelikaan met de 3 jongen', vraagt Sneezy of er ook een ‘beroemde’ slakkenbeeld op deze abdij bevindt?’ ‘Helaas niet, de slak komt er in het katholieke geloof er heel slecht vanaf. Want zo staat er in de bijbel; Psalm 58.9Smeltende slakken in de woestijn. Laten zij vergaan als een smeltende slak'. En in; Psalm 58.9job 3:16 ‘Als een slak die kruipend oplost in het slijm als een misgeboorte die nooit de zon ziet’.
Na die vreselijke woorden voor Sneezy, komt Waselius met iets anders; De ridders tegen de slakken.
Uit de gedigitaliseerde mediëval boeken van de British Library heb ik verschillende afbeelding zeer nauwkeurig nagetekend.
De gevechtsscène die een ridder afschildert tegen een slak, komt verrassend vaak voor in Engelse manuscripten uit de 13de en 14de eeuw. Op allerlei vormen is de slak getekend. Soms is de ridder dapper, soms niet. Vaak is de slakmonsterlijk, soms klein. Dan weer is de slak helemaal over de pagina, soms vlak onder de voet van de ridder. Meestal wordt de ridder zo getekend dat hij bang, verbluft of geschrokken is door zijn vijand.
Over de juiste betekenis zijn 'deskundigen' zeer verdeeld, ik vond ze bijzonder komisch en heb ze meegenomen in mijn reisverhaal.
Hier kun je zien dat het slakkenhuis een inspiratie-bron is voor gekke onderwerpen. Ik moet nog een klein stukje schrijven én een heel klein tekeningetje bijmaken.

The combat scene depicting a knight against a snail is surprisingly common in English manuscripts from the 13th and 14th centuries.The snail is drawn on all kinds of shapes. Sometimes the knight is brave, sometimes not. 
The snail is often monstrous, sometimes small.Then again the snail is all over the page, sometimes just below the knight's foot. Usually the knight is drawn so that he is frightened, stunned or shocked by his enemy.
'Experts' are very divided about the correct meaning, I found them extremely comical and have included them in my travel story.
Here you can see that the cochlea is a source of inspiration for crazy topics. I still have to write a small piece and make a very small drawing.

De kubusglobe van oom Viclar - The cube globe of uncle Viclar

Muis is helemaal in zijn ’nopjes’ met zijn blauwe puntmuts. Het drietal volgt Scuffie op weg naar de vijver en lopen in een soort groot paddestoelenbos. Voor hij gaat sporten vertelt Scuffie hoe hij hier terecht is gekomen, want een boomknikker leeft normaal niet hier.
Ik kom uit Pocras, volgens mijn oom is dat het werelddeel Kroyath op zijn kubusglobe’. 'Kubusglobe’, vroeg mus. ‘Die zal ik je later laten zien’, zei Scuffie. Mus en muis keken elkaar aan met een blik van; wat een gestoorde oom. Scuffie ging verder met zijn verhaal. Het is een land met tropische regenwouden. Wij zijn eigenlijk boombewoners die ’s nachts actief zijn en zich overdag verstoppen tussen de bladeren. Het was in het begin behoorlijk wennen aan dit ’koude kikkerlandje. Maar nu voel ik me hier helemaal thuis.
Scuffie maakt zijn sportactiviteiten op diverse paddestoelen en vertelt wat de soorten zijn. 'Nu gaan we naar mijn ’zwemvriend Tyvar’. 
Scuffie toont aan Mus&Muis een afbeelding van een gebroken ei. Aandachtig wordt het bekeken. ’Hebben jullie een idee, wat er uit dit ei is gekomen,’ vraagt Scuffie. En voegt er gelijk bij; ’het is geen vogel, ook geen vis, heeft kleine tanden, kan op land lopen en ook zwemmen.’

Scuffie shows Mus & Muis an image of a broken egg. It is being watched attentively. 'Do you have an idea what came out of this egg'. Scuffie asks. And adds immediately; 'It is not a bird, nor a fish, has small teeth, can walk on land and also swim'.

Waselius en zijn soulmates - Waselius and his stone soulmates

Waselius laat zien dat zijn soulmates echte vrienden zijn. Hij aait met zijn poot over het rechter beeld. Tot verbazing zien Mr.P.&Sneezy dat het stenen beeld veranderd. Er verschijnt een glimlach en de versteende ogen worden bijna 'menselijk'.
Mr.P. en Sneezy keken naar een grappig beeldje van zo’n 18 cm hoog achter Waselius. Ze dachten dat het beeld even met zijn ogen knipperde. 'Dat is een speciaal verhaal. Een eigenschap van wasberen is dat we vooral ‘s nachts actief zijn, en ik ontdekte op de zolder van de abdij deze waterspuwer. Hij was erg verzakt, vleugels hingen slap, ondervoed en gromde als ik te dicht bij hem kwam. Vertrouwen met hem opgebouwd en nu helpt hij mij bij mijn werk'. 'Hoe dan', vraag Sneezy. Waselius vertelt dat hij Procopius heet, een Griekse naam, dat betekent ‘vooruitgang of vordering’. Kijk naar zijn penneveer met zijn initiaal P, en een rood bolletje onderaan'.
'Jou helpen met een pen die niet kan schrijven', vraag Sneezy. 'Jazeker....... als ik tijdens mijn werk in slaap val, stampt hij met die veer op het blauwe bolletje. Nou en dat hij héél hard!'

Waselius werkplek - Waselius workplace

Op deze 2 pagina's zijn we bij de werkplek van wasbeer 'Waselius'. Met zijn vriend Hoptarius hebben ze toegang tot de bibliotheek. Hij kan goed met een ganzenveer omgaan, het schrijven en tekenen beheert hij uitstekend. Mr.P.&Sneezy willen weten wie de vogels hadden beschilderd. Waselius wist van hun komst en laat uit het originele document een vel met verenmotieven zien. Sneezy heeft meer aandacht voor de 2 stenen beelden aan de muur. Het zijn de 'soulmates' van Waselius.
Links zien jullie ‘Kozma, dat betekent ‘decoratie. Hij houdt mij in de gaten of ik voldoende decoratie in de afbeeldingen verwerk. Rechts is ‘Damianos’, de bedwinger. Als de pelikaan het beeld beter wil bekijken, raadt Waselius het af..... hij kan wel eens vreemd reageren op jou! Dan ziet Sneezy een rond luikje open gaan en verschijnt er een handje met 3 rode veertjes.
'Dat is één van de 3 kluisbewaarders die in deze werktafel '.

Picasso; 'Alles wat je kunt voorstellen is echt'. - "All you can imagine is real."

In de Britse bibliotheek vond ik mediëval boeken die digitaal bekeken kunnen worden.
Hierin staan bijzonder komische illustraties die ik voor mijn reisverhaal zeer goed kon gebruiken. Die geestige versieringen heten 'drolleries' De meeste drollery-afbeeldingen verschijnen als gemengde wezens. Dus tussen dieren en mensen, of zelfs tussen dieren en planten’.
Ik heb ze nauwkeurig na kunnen tekenen, omdat elke bladzijde professioneel zijn gefotografeerd.

Het is een van de beroemdste middel-eeuwse manuscripten vanwege de rijke illustraties van het dagelijks leven in de 14e eeuw. Het werd waarschijnlijk ergens tussen 1325 en 1335 geschreven en getekend. Het geeft een beeld van het dagelijkse middeleeuwse leven, liturgische kalenders of religieuze feesten, heilendagen en gebeden.
